The Cytonix Corporation, which was founded in 1985 as CytoFluidics, Inc., began as a startup company in the University of
Maryland’s Technology Advancement
Program, with access to the Naval Research Lab's
semiconductor facility. Founders of the company were Dr. Elaine
Lanza, Bruce Golden, Richard Schneider, Dr. Randal Armant and James
Brown.
Initial goals were the
development of proprietary concepts for digital
microfluidic circuits using both electrowetting
of hydrophobic surfaces and 2-fluid
control systems with hydrophobic/hydrophilic micro
structures. Substantial effort was focused on
the development of
hydrophilic, hydrophobic and super-hydrophobic coatings and
resists. These
efforts, aided by a Phase
II grant from
NSF, resulted in broad range of intellectual
property.
Now located
in Beltsville, Maryland,
Cytonix manufactures numerous
products for life sciences, electronics, aerospace and
communications. Products are now sold directly and through other
manufacturers
and distributors world wide. Current research initiatives involve
Digital PCR and
electrowetting-based microfluidics, with continued development of
fluorinated coatings and additives. Digital PCR was conceived and
developed in a collaboration with Jon
Silver at the NIH, resulting in a
family of patents
and published
or pending applications that have been exclusively licensed to Cytonix.
In 2006, Cytonix formed the subsidiary Genomic Nanosystems to
develop,
license and commercialize IP in digital genomics. Leading this
effort are Dr. Elaine Lanza
and Dr. Luke
Ratnasinghe.
